Bear studies and turkey season are in our sights on Kentucky Afield television this weekend, Feb. 27 and 28. Follow Kentucky Afield television to Letcher County, where snowy mountainsides set the backdrop for black bear research. Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, with assistance from University of Kentucky researchers, climb into the bears winter dens to count cubs and place radio-tracking collars on hibernating mother bears. Research on bears - one of the forests most secretive animals - helps us to better understand growth and travel patterns of these mammals.

Were off to Somerset, tape measure in hand, for the official scoring of a bull elk taken by hunter Chris Godby. Viewers will remember Godbys hunt as featured last fall on Kentucky Afield television. Godby won his commission elk tag through a special drawing held by the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation. What makes the story special is that proceeds from the raffle will benefit Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources conservation camps. As fifth and sixth graders begin registering a week at summer camp, we talk about the experiences ahead that the raffle helped fund.
